Cruise Ship Facility Impacting Cruisers
MSC Cruises is developing a $450 million cruise terminal in Freeport, Grand Bahama, set to transform the area with a new pier, a 20-acre beach club, and upgraded retail areas. The project includes a $400 million investment in the Billy Key port area and $50 million for a new, large-scale multi-user terminal and beach facility.
Key Details of the New Grand Bahama Facilities:
· MSC Cruises Freeport Terminal ($450M): This massive development at Freeport Harbour includes a new pier capable of handling the largest cruise ships, along with a visitor center, retail space, and a dedicated beach club, notes MSC Cruises. The project aims to improve the passenger experience from the current industrial surroundings of the harbor.
· Carnival Corporation Project: Carnival is separately developing its own exclusive destination on the south side of Grand Bahama. This project features a 1-mile beach, extensive retail and dining, and is designed to accommodate two of its largest ships, serving up to 1 million passengers annually.
· Grand Bahama Shipyard Investment ($600M): Further strengthening the island's maritime capabilities, a $600 million project is transforming the Grand Bahama Shipyard into the world's largest cruise ship repair facility, capable of handling the largest vessels.
· MSC Partnership: MSC Cruises buys in to Grand Bahama Shipyard indicates the cruise line is also joining Royal Caribbean and Carnival to participate in the shipyard’s expansion.
These developments are part of a broader push by the Bahamian government to boost the island’s tourism and economic recovery through significant, multi-year investments.
